Get Half Up Front

It’s disappointing that I consistently forget the first rule of web design: Get Half Up Front. I sometimes wish I could be a real dick of a business guy and always get paid, even when the finished work doesn’t live up to the client’s expectations, but I don’t have that in me. For this reason, I hate taking freelance jobs. Nowadays I do print for only one client (who ALWAYS pays) and no one else, and I used to think I’d do web stuff for whoever came along. Uh, no. Every web job I’ve ever taken on has been a pain in the ass. I have actually been paid for one, which still amazes me. When a project grows cold the phone calls grow further apart and eventually people forget they they once wanted you to do something for them…and I forget I was ever excited about the project. I spend time on them and don’t get anything. I guess they don’t either. At least I learn how to do things better in the process. Sort of sad. Whatever. Bowled a 201 tonight. I have air in my head. Ennui rules.
