The Anticlimactic Fizzle. Fo-shizzle.
When I gave notice to my employer today, it just sort of happened…and that was it. My declaration was met with, “Quite frankly, I thought you would have done this about three or four months ago” and remarks about my “lack of communication” regarding what I needed to get my job done (how can “will you hire a database person?” or “when will the data warehouse be purchased?” be any more direct?) and theories about how an acquaintance of mine may have planted thoughts in my head and encouraged me to strike out on my own (which is laughably false).
I have to write a ’summary’ of what projects I was working on and what processes I use everyday to get my job done, as well as collect all login/password info and information regarding domain names, hosting, and the like. Once I’m done with that and they’ve had time to process the info, an announcement will be made to all of those unsuspecting souls I work with (do I hear crickets? Hey, who yawned?), those folks who may have not yet figured out that I’ve been showing up for work in body only for a while now, that in a few weeks the ‘Web Department’ will no longer exist.
I want to leave the company on the best of terms. The people are nice, and I was given opportunity for growth, which I made use of. Unfortunately, where it was going and where I’m going are in two different zipcodes.
I’m not sure what the company’s plan is for the continuation of their site, but that may be resolved when I sit down with the owner again and hash out the details of the department’s (auto)biography. Will it rise from the ashes to become the tweety-bird it once was? Will some wunderkind show up to take the site (three websites, actually) to a new level of beauty and user interaction? Who knows.
What I do know is that unless the site is sourced out to a team of people, or unless they are willing to hire more than one person to manage the incredible amount of information that comes down the pike, the new person’s desire to “get creative” will fizzle after the honeymoon is over - just as mine did. There is no on-deck batter. No heir apparent. No plan B. We’ll see soon enough if the theory I’ve held for a very long time is true: in this case, the Web Department was an afterthought, and the website a novelty item, there so you could say you had one. Because, you know, if you don’t have one, what good are you?
Glad to hear you are getting out. How about a post on where you are headed?

Hey Ryan!, just checking your website and WoW.
You’re not in DD anymore? I don’t have your
email, that’s why I’m writing in this comment box.
Wishing you good luck in your new endeavors!
