OK, So Maybe HyperEdit, not TextMate, Is The Answer
Just last week I was eagerly awaiting the release of TextMate - and I think it’s probably NOT what I need as someone who certainly can and does code webpages by hand, but primarily works on my own site and a few small to medium sized freelance sites using some XHTML/CSS/PHP. TextMate seems geared less for the web designer than for someone who actually codes. Which is fine, and if I had been paying attention, I might have realized this in the first place.
I found skEdit to be somewhat unreliable - I would change the color of some tags and my whole document would become that color. The FTP was weak(which isn’t such a big deal, as I can use an easy, lightweight and cheap third-party FTP client such as the very cool CyberDuck I just started using this week), and most importantly, it kept crashing. Which made BBEdit look better and better.
Along comes the new Macworld with a feature I think should be in there every month: 60 Awesome Low-Cost (or free) Utilities. Along with a slew of other things I downloaded was the very cool HyperEdit . It is pretty bare bones, and I can do just about everything I need to with it. Decent code-coloring, snippets, it’s cheap ($19.95), written by someone who is going to work for Apple, and it hasn’t crashed yet. There are some things that would make this program much better - like tabs (or even a drawer like BBEdit) because I often work on lots of docs at once) FTP support, and code completion, but as-is, it seems to be a tight little package.
If you’re like me, and don’t want to pay for BBEdit 8 (which I could live with if it wasn’t over $100), can’t stand Dreamweaver for the Mac, and just need a decent way to work on your PHP pages in a slick program with a fast internal preview window, this software may interest you.
BBEdit isn’t so bad if you avoid the idiot tax and do a cross-upgrade from BBEdit Lite.
BBEdit Upgrade
I keep trying other editors as well, but I always seem to come back to BBEdit. After watching a few friends fly on emacs, I’m tempted to try using BBEdit w/ the Emacs keybindings option.
