It Boggles My Mind

It boggles my mind. Sometimes someone might have to send you a bit of text. Nothing fancy or private. Maybe a list, a recipe, directions, whatever.

So, logically, they paste it into a Word document, save the document, write an email to you saying that the text is attached, and then, because they might assume you have Word or even use it more than once a year, attach the Word document to the email so you can get the text.

I once told someone (had to…I was getting too many Word docs) that they could paste text into an email and send it. I think that blew their mind. In fact, there are two ways to cut down on the use of Word documents (or Excel spreadsheets, or Powerpoint presentations… do I see a pattern here?). Try these:

1) Copy your text. Paste in your email. Send.
2) Type directly in your mail app. Send.

Works on all platforms, and you don’t need to worry about having a lousy piece of software on your computer!

(Although I admit that I do have this lousy software, because I get too many Word docs. Maybe this article will change the world.)

    Word is evil, I agree.

  2. Eric scribbled:

Not to be rude, but you know Word is the standard for just about any professional document, right? And you can just as easily use StarOffice or OpenOffice if you need to read a Word doc but don’t feel like getting your morals dirty.

  3. ryan spake, and sayeth:

Eric - My point is, if you are sending a few lines of text via email, why do you even need to crack open a word processing program? I don’t care what program it is. I’ve had people send me things unnecessarily put in Open Office documents as well.

Just seems like a little extra waste of time and effort. I supposed if they’re paying me to waste time and open the thing, hey…I shouldn’t be complaining, right?
